Overview:
The Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) agreement between the European Commission and the United States is a programme that aims to improve energy efficiency, and lower engine emissions and aircraft noise. By taking advantage of air traffic management best practices and new technologies, AIRE expects to accelerate the implementation of environmentally friendly procedures for all phases of flight and to validate the benefits of these improvements. AIRE is jointly managed by the Federal Aviation Administration and the SESAR Joint Undertaking. At ATC Global, the FAA and the SJU will reveal the outcome of numerous trials and flight activities during the “Annual AIRE Conference” [AIRE Workshop] on 9 March 2010. Don’t miss it!
At ATC Global 2010 the SJU together with the FAA presented the results from the AIRE (Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions) trials in 2009. On the European side more than 1,100 flight trials were conducted by 18 partners in five locations. AIRE, SESAR’s green programme component, clearly shows that by working together on improving current procedures, considerable gains in terms of fuel efficiency and consequently lower CO2 emissions can be achieved. While the main aim of the test campaign was to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of green flight procedures, concrete fuel and CO2 savings could be measured. Analysis of the data collected show that 400 tonnes of CO2 could be saved during the flight trials which corresponds to the annual CO2 emission of 100 passenger cars. The AIRE initiative will be expanded in 2010, a corresponding call for tenders is currently published. “AIRE is the right programme at the right time. We do something for the airlines, the environment and the passengers. Now it is time that we progress from ‘flight trials’ to ‘day-to-day’ green operations”, Patrick Ky stressed during the AIRE announcement. All results from the European trials are published in the brochure " Delivering Green Results - A Summary of AIRE projects results" (PDF format).

Overview:
SESAR is Europe’s unique & ambitious challenge in Research & Development in Air Traffic Management. The ATM modernisation programme will develop the new generation air traffic management system Europe needs. It unites all air transport actors, reaches out to its international counterparts and helps lowering the environmental impact of aviation. At ATC Global, the SESAR Joint Undertaking presents the progress made so far and gives an outlook to what will happen in 2010.
The SESAR Forum gave an update to stakeholders on the progress made so far and the priorities of the next months. In his opening speech, Patrick Ky, Executive Director of the SESAR Joint Undertaking, confirmed, “The mindset of SESAR is crystal clear. We work with a distinct implementation goal in mind, in the short, medium and long term. For this reason end-users of the SESAR systems need to be involved in all the steps of the programme.” Amongst others, Daniel Calleja, Director Air Transport Directorate, European Commission and David McMillan, Director General, Eurocontrol took the floor and expressed their expectations in the delivery of early benefits. Members of the SJU team and representatives of the members completed the insights into the SESAR programme. All presentations are here.

Global case studies will be highlighted.
Specific panel topics will include WAM as a replacement for Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR); WAM as the primary sensor for Precision Runway Monitoring (PRM) and enhanced terminal surveillance; WAM as a distributed surveillance system for environments with terrain challenges and low level coverage of aircraft; and WAM as a back-up to Automatic Dependant Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B). The use of WAM as a transitional technology – to allow Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel to conduct “integrity checks” on incoming ADS-B data and provide an alternative to GPS constellations – will also be discussed.
